How to Construct the ultimate cover letter

Applying for jobs can be such a frustrating task. From finding the perfect post to landing the interview;
one thing we can all agree on is how the waiting period is the worst. You are left wondering whether
you will hear from the recruiter or not, be it bad or good news. One way to make sure your application
stands out is by writing a brilliant profile. This is the first item the potential employer will read when
they open your application. This is the one opportunity you have to show the recruiter who you are and
why they should hire you. Your profile must be concise and factual. Here are a few ways to polish your
cover letter and make it memorable.

Before you begin writing your cover letter, you need to prepare and do a bit of research, you can find all
that information in the application. Look out for things like who will be receiving your application, what
your skills and experience are as well as the company and its background. Once you have collected
everything you can start writing your cover letter. Your profile needs to focus on summarizing your
career and qualifications and emphasize your future career plans and aspirations. You must list your
skills and expertise and briefly describe your personality.

The basic construction of a cover letter is as follows

Paragraph one – The introduction
Paragraph two – The body of the letter
Paragraph three – Show your knowledge by stating facts previous experience
Paragraph four – Conclusion

You want to make sure your letter is brief, around 200-300 words max. Remember this is not your CV!
Add only what’s important. This is the best time to market yourself, make sure to demonstrate
knowledge in the role you are applying for. Highlight relevant skills, qualifications, and goals for the
position as well as the company. Don’t forget to highlight your social and interpersonal skills. You can
talk about volunteering you do in your spare time or any clubs or societies you are a member of.
Do not use too many overused statements and descriptions such as: hard working and result orientated.
These are opinions – there are no proof- a potential employer wants proof.

Choose a template for your cover letter. Make it presentable, but don’t use too much formatting-
recruiters look for facts and not art (unless you are applying for an art/creative position, it only clutters
the CV) . The effort you put into it shows the commitment and pride you have in your work. These are
good qualities that might land you the job.

Keep in mind to structure your cover letter well, and make sure the spelling and grammar are checked.
Always address the letter formally, try to personalize it, by using the Hiring Manager’s name if possible.
Your cover letter serves as your first impression, make it count! Good luck and happy job hunting!
